Welcome to the Shire

North Island, New Zealand – Hobbiton Movie Set

June 9, 2019

So I’ve officially fulfilled one of the items on my childhood bucket list and have found the happiest place on earth.

Some fun facts:

The original set of Hobbiton is on a family sheep farm on the North Island, New Zealand

Peter Jackson found this location by doing a helicopter tour all over New Zealand before settling on this sheep farm

Some of the New Zealand army helped out by being orcs in the movie!

One of the trees by Bilbo’s house is completely man made

The set designers wanted the entire Shire set to look as realistic as possible, so every day, someone would walk on the grass to hang clothes on the line and then take the clothes off at the end of the day, in order to make the grass look as if it would if people had been walking around on it for years
